How do you integrate a ground fault circuit interrupter into a mobile home?

I am trying to install a 50 amp spa gfci in an rv to protect a hot tub, but I am having trouble with it false tripping. I have been testing aspects of the system all afternoon and it seems that whenever any load is placed on the gfci, it trips.

At this point, the only theory I have is that because the rv’s electrical system is based on 3 wires and 2 legs at 240 volts (hot-neutral-hot), the gfci is interpreting the normal return of current over the neutral lead as a short (that would be coming through what is normally the ground) and tripping.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Im racking my brain trying to figure out how to make this gfci work on a system where the ground and the neutral are both connected to the body of the vehicle.

When you say ANY load, does that mean loads other than the tub?
In a home, such devices as water heaters, sometimes refrigerators, are NOT protected by ground fault devices, as the leakage from the heater element to the grounded sheathe of the element exceeds the trip current of the breaker.
Refrigerators tend to be a wet environment, and may sometimes also have a high leakage (especially older ones!).
I would suggest opening the ground connection, and placing an AC ammeter (milliammeter) in series, without the interruper ground in circuit. Switch on the tub, and check ground fault current. Be careful! You might be surprised.
A megger check on the element(s) after disconnecting it/ them, will prove or disprove whether it/ they are leaky. If it’s 1, maybe replacement might fix your problem.
Or, the source might be something wet other than the elements? Probably, if the element(s) megger OK.
If the leakage is inherent, you might consider raising the trip current for the breaker, but that’s hardly to be recommended!
